As of May 6th 2010, Microsoft added a button to its Bing search engine enabling users to seek feedback from their friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Whilst many sites offer reviews and product comparisons, everyone is aware of the power and authority of personal referrals. Once users click on ‘view price’ they will be offered the option to share that item and get their friends opinions using Twitter, Facebook and also regular emails.

The Bing team also explain that the new tool can be used for comparisons, by asking friends if the price listed is the best price that they have seen or if they should keep looking.

Bing and Google have both being forming links with social mediums and involving them in their respective search engines in an attempt to bring the two services together. If users begin to rely primarily on their social connections, advertisers will obviously begin advertising more on social platforms to guarantee more views, and then one of the biggest incomes of the search engines will be dramatically reduced.

Whilst this move seems to be a smart idea which will target an audience of over 500 million users, it is in fact a move that search engines cannot afford to overlook if they want to continue achieving the profits that they currently do.
